BKC Contests: Kneeboard Nationals 2004

2004's Kneeboard Surfing Nationals finally happened on 27th November at Fistral Beach in Newquay. Following two postsponements, this was the last chance to run the contest and things did not look good surfwise as the day approached. Luckily there was a small low which gave us a weak but contestable 2' wave to play with. With numbers slightly down on last year, due to the postponements, the event got underway and the first heat hit the water at 9.00am. The contest for the men's open title was at first very closely contested, with some impressive displays of surfing despite the weak conditions. As the day went on it became more obvious who the in-form surfer was. Karl Ward blasted his way through his semi final and carried his momentum into the final to take a comfortable victory.
This year the women's event was held over three heats to give the competitors more of a surf. The competitors were given a score depending on their placing in each heat. and things were looking close going into the final round as Jodie Troth and Liz Upward both had one win and a second. In the final heat Jodie's greater contest experience showed and she took the win and the title for the second year running.
